It has been clear in recent years that an alliance of Denmark, Greenland and Japan is a powerful force in making more whale slaughters happen. But more than that, the IWC/65/15 Draft Resolution on Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling (ASW) (which was supported by Italy, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom) has shown that many EU countries have an ambivalence to do anything about this wholesale slaughter!
In 2018, Greenland killed a total of 131 whales (118 Minke whales, 7 Fin whales and 6 Humpbacks).
The IWC has now decided to meet every two years instead of each year. Isn’t this surprising, when the population of whales is lower than ever before and the problems greater than ever! And that some member states choose to flout the rules anyway.
Make your voice heard – the more people who do this, the more likely we are to save these magnificent marine mammals.
